STS-49 had the first use of the drag chute for landing The STS-49 mission set many new records for NASA. There are a few viewing events planned for this morning all over California and at last word Palmdale will be later in the morning as the shuttle returns to Southern California on the way to LAX. Space program employees, media and several hundred thousand spectators held their breath in rapt attention as the minutes ticked down to launch - then space shuttle Endeavour's main engines ignited for the final time at 8:56 a.m. Endeavour landed at Edwards Air Force Base on after an 8-day,21-hour mission. I actually spoke to a number of people at the main gate yesterday morning that were very disappointed that the new base commander prevented the public from accessing the facility for this event. Endeavour’s first mission was the first time four spacewalks were conducted on a single flight, and one of them was the second-longest in space history, with two astronauts spending eight hours and seven minutes in space (take that Sandra Bullock). My office sits about 1/2 a mile North of Avenue N on Sierra Highway and even our parking lot is beginning to fill up as I write this comment. Built later than the other space shuttles, the Endeavor did not arrive at. The Space Shuttle Endeavour (OV-105) is named after the first ship commanded by 18th century British explorer James Cook. There has to be at least 100 cars packed on every square inch of BJs Corner and additional cars parked up and down Sierra Highway. This vehicle permit pass was given out for the arrival of the space shuttle Endeavour. Within 1/2 a mile of Sierra Highway there was already cars pulled off the side of the road and the became more densely stacked as BJs corner approached. As I traveled east down Avenue N at 7:15 this morning on my way to work I was alerted to the lack of flow in traffic on what is normally a very empty street. This morning there are already 500-1000 vehicles at B.J.s corner waiting for the Space Shuttle to make one last pass over Plant 42.
